One of the most noteworthy moments in the new teaser for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens was the introduction of a cross-guard lightsaber, something that has never been seen in a Star Wars film. Here's a gif of the thing to refresh your memory:
The new type of weapon has generated quite a bit of buzz. First of all the blade is much more raw and fiery than blades we have seen in films past, but the most apparent different is the cross-guard. Some have commented on how unwieldy the weapon looks. My response to those arguments is this image:
Also, it's about time we see a claymore lightsaber. Despite the apparent novelty of this lightsaber, it has actually been seen before in the now non-canon Expanded Universe comics.
Roblio Darté was a Jedi Knight during the Clone Wars. He wielded a lightsaber with a cross-guard, though it was only one-sided. The guard provides protection, but it can also be used offensively as well. Hopefully this means we are going to be treated to awesome, unique light-saber duels.
Also, on a somewhat unrelated note, here is a picture of one of the "actors" who played the banters from Episode IV.
