So we finally have a teaser for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. In case you haven't seen it yet check it out here:
True to his form, J. J. Abrams has chosen to release a teaser that embodies every meaning of the word. Seriously I have no clearer idea about the movie's plot after watching the trailer which is really how teasers are supposed to work. Despite the lack of plot details, the trailer still had plenty of details which I will now over-analyze.
So the first thing that becomes apparent is the absence of any of the original trilogy's characters. This bothered me at first since I was hoping to see a shadowy shot of Luke as a seasoned Jedi master, but all in all I like the choice. It makes a clear statement that this trilogy will not be relying on the original characters which is good because the original characters are old, and old people don't really fight wars. It's good to see that this new trilogy will be focused on a new set of young characters.
The other thing immediately jumped out to me was the awesome new lightsaber, complete with laser guards. It literally looked like a futuristic medieval great sword, like the type of weapon William Wallace would wield in a galaxy far, far away. I'm happy to see the production design go off into original directions. Frankly I'm surprised it's taken this long for us to see a new type of saber. To me it shows a willingness to take risks with original ideas. This won't be a lazy cash-in film with zero innovation.
Speaking of new designs...how cool do those stormtroopers look? Here's a better picture of the helmet. It's actually from the upcoming Battlefront game but it is based on the new stormtroopers:
It was also wonderful to see the new X-Wings in action as well as everybody's favorite Corellian freighter, the Millennium Falcon. The dogfight scenes featuring the fighters were short but they were impressive. The prequel trilogy didn't have nearly enough quality dogfights for my liking so I am really hoping Episode VII delivers on the piloted action. It is about wars fought amongst the stars after all.
Over all, the teaser raised more questions than it answered, which is exactly what a teaser should do. December 2015 can't come soon enough!
